A badly worn shaft arrives at our facility for repair. It is put into one of our lathes and dialed in. The initial inspection (as indicated by the picture) shows the journal surface to be severely pitted and gauged. A Total Indicated Runout (T.I.R.) is done on the circumference of the journal which shows it to be out-of-round. The key has also been loose in the keyway causing significant damage.
