The machinist uses a
set of calibrated digital calipers to measure the Outside
Diameter (O.D.) of the journal, keyway and groove dimensions.
He takes several measurements at different points along
the length of the journal and writes these dimensions
down on the drawing he has made of the piece. These measurements,
along with the Inside Diameter (I.D.) of the sprocket
that fits onto this journal gives him the finished measurement
he
will machine the shaft to.
